Friends Don't Let Friends Text & Drive

Posted 7/31/2009 4:21:16 PM

According to The New York Times , "a new poll shows that many drivers know the risks of texting while driving — and do it anyway. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety plans on Tuesday to publish polling data that show that 87 percent of people consider drivers texting or e-mailing to pose a 'very serious' safety threat (roughly equal to the 90 percent who consider drunken drivers a threat)."

On this topic, Teen Editor Sarah can relate saying "I have seen people in cars next to me do it. Some swerve and do things with their cars as drunk drivers would."

Teen Editor Tiffanie chimes in with, "When I drive, I tell everyone I’m texting that I'm driving so I'll text them back later, but my friends can be a little less cautious about things." Read More

In an article published by the BBC, Joseph Bonneau, PhD, states that “social networking sites often take a lazy approach to user privacy, doing what's simpler rather than what is correct”. Yahoo! Tech went further to reiterate that “nearly half of the social networking sites don’t immediately delete pictures when a user request they be removed.”

Teen editor Caley says, “This article made some really good points, and it was pretty scary to learn just how long info can hang around the Internet.” Read more on this topic!

Are you familiar with sexting? “Sexting” is when teens take sexual or nude pictures of themselves and then send the pictures to others. Watch this news report about sexting, which reveals something teens might not know - a teen that has sent or received a nude or suggestive photo can be charged with child pornography.

Also, a recent study by the National Campaign to Support Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy points out that “a significant number of teens have electronically sent, or posted online, nude or semi-nude pictures or video of themselves. 20% of teens overall say they have sent/posted nude or seminude pictures or video of themselves.” For more commentary and info, read more.

Teen editor Dominique says “This shocked me to find that one out of every five teens participates in "sexting,"

Koobface sounds pretty funny, maybe even cute, doesn't it? Perhaps, if it wasn't a nasty worm trying to invade your computer!
