"Sexting" Shockingly Common with Teens

Posted 5/20/2009 4:03:18 PM

Dominique continues: “I found this article to be very important for many teens that have participated in "sexting" or have received a nude or suggestive picture from someone.” More interesting findings from the nation wide survey by the National Campaign to Support Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy include:

  • Teens are conflicted about sending/posting sexually suggestive content—they know it’s potentially dangerous, yet many do it anyway. 75% of teens say sending sexually suggestive content “can have serious negative consequences.”

  • Teens give many reasons for sending/posting sexually suggestive content. Most say it is a “fun and flirtatious” activity. 51% of teen girls say pressure from a guy is a reason girls send sexy messages or images; while only 18% of teen boys cited pressure from female counterparts as a reason.

  • Teens are sending sexually explicit messages and images, even though they know such content often gets shared with those other than the intended recipient. 44% of both teen girls and teen boys say it is common for sexually suggestive text messages to get shared with people other than the intended recipient.

  • Teens admit that sending/posting sexually suggestive content has an impact on their behavior. 29% of teens believe exchanging sexually suggestive content are “expected” to date or hook up.

What do you think?

I feel that "sexting" is a terrible mistake that teens and adults make, because what is meant to be sent to just one person is often distributed to others and can certainly ruin ones reputation. "

I think it's wrong that people are pressured into these types of things and that if you think that you're sending a picture to one person, most the time, everyone that you know will end up seeing the picture.

whoa I just read n article about that in TIME or something like that. I still don't get why people do that, cuz it can knock you out of scholarships for college and jobs you want just because you decided it would make a whole lot of sense to send someone a nude pic of yourself.

Wow, that was a really interesting thing. I cant believe 1 in 5 teens do that, its crazy, who would want to send newd pictures of yourself anyway?

It's hard because something meant for the eyes of one person can easily be spread around. And once you've sent it, you can't get it back!!

i feel very bad for kids who do that because the pics will never go away

elisabeths9: Tuesday, June 09, 2009

I wouldn't walk down the street without clothes on, so I'm not going to allow pictures of me to circulate. Not many of us would walk around without clothes, so why would anyone do this? It's crazy!

I like the way elisabeths9 put it, if you don't want everyone to see a naked picture of you, then don't let anyone see a naked picture of you.

Look to me its a terible mistake this will posibly ruin college aplications and could ruin your reputation. There is no way that the picture u send to ur best friends will stay among ur best friends and u wouldn't be naked face to face in front of them so why would you do this????

Seriously, that is a big mistake that teens and even young adults, make! It's a terrible reality especially knowing you can be charged with child porn charges. And not to mention the fact you can be bullied! Not everyone is nice out there. Two words...Be Safe. I also totally agree with elisabeth9.
