About Me

Hey! My name is Laura, I’m 15 years old, and I live in North Carolina. I have been a Girl Scout for 11 years. I’m a little dorky, and I am kind of spastic. I love to read and write, and I am a recovering chocoholic.

Why I advocate for online safety.

The Internet is everywhere, and it is a very useful tool! But it can also be dangerous if we don’t know how to safely use it. Online safety is so important because it’s our responsibility. Our parents have trouble protecting us, because by the time they’ve finally figured out how to set up controls, we’re light-years ahead of them. I’m advocating online safety because I think teens are more likely to listen to other people their age. I know a lot of people, myself included, who have done some not-so-smart things online, and if I’m able to help convince just one person to be more aware and safe on the computer, then I know I have made a difference.

Q & A

  • Are your online friendships different than your real-life friendships? How?
  • I definitely act differently in my online friendships that I do with my face-to-face friends. I am a lot more careful about the information I post on the internet, and I don’t get into my personal life with the people whom I’ve never really met.
  • What would you like to tell or teach your parents about the Internet?
  • I would want to teach my parents that we learn from our mistakes, and that we should be allowed some trust. Parents try to set up all these different restrictions, which only make us want what we can't have even more! If they can trust us to stay safe, and provide us with the resources to do so, then we will most likely do what is right.
  • How can you help younger siblings or kids be safer online?
  • I think that if we talk to younger kids about how to be safe, and show them through good examples, then they will be safer when they use the Internet.
