Why Do Teens Do It?

Quick ... what comes to your mind when you picture a cyberbully? A supersize boy with not much between his ears? That kid that always eats lunch by himself? Well, ditch the stereotypes! Because lots of different types of people cyberbully, and they do it for a lot of different reasons. Some of the common motivations for cyberbullying include:

  • Anger or jealousy – they want to get revenge
  • Boredom – they have nothing else to do
  • Self-righteousness – they think it’s their job to fix the world
  • Carelessness – they don’t realize what they’re doing … or how the victim might feel

In fact, not all cyberbullying is even intentional. Sometimes people feel cyberbullied when the person who sent the message didn’t mean to cyberbully at all.
