WiredSafety’s research shows that, among 11 – 14 year old girls and boys gamers polled:
• 49.5% play one to two hours a week
• 32.4% play several times a week
• 12.5% play over ten hours a week
• 17.0% play several times a day
• 74% of students polled said they prefer games with live voice chat or typed chat to those without live communication features.
• 43% of 11- 14 year olds polled said that they will communicate with people in the game they didn’t know in real life.
• 5% reported that someone they met in the game suggested meeting offline
• 40% reported that they had been cyberbullied in the game
• 85% play Guitar Hero (or some other game from the series)
When do kids start playing computer games?
• 6.5% began between 13-14
• 35.3% began between 11-12
• 33.7% began between 9-10
• 24.5% began at 8 or younger
