When is Sharing Fun Things Sharing Too Much?

We share all kinds of things online, even with people who are not close friends. But sometimes this information can come back and haunt us.

It includes pics, our school, personal family information, cell numbers, videos, pics of our friends and screen names. It might include where we work and when. But we don’t always realize that this info can be used to hurt us.

Cyberbullies use it to pose as their victim in a cyberbullying-by-proxy attack. It makes it easier to steal your identity, or guess your password. It makes it easier to find your vulnerabilities or pose as someone you trust. It makes their lies and rumors more believable.

Think about what information you should and shouldn’t share. Look over your profiles and see what you are saying that might give away too much info about you. Play detective with your friends’ profiles to find anything that could be misused and that should be kept private.

Password protect everything you can and guard your password carefully. Check and see what your friends are posting about you. Even when they are friendly, they may give away too much personal information about you by accident. The more you keep personal information to yourself, the safer you are.

This is advice our grandmothers gave to our mothers and our mothers gave to us. Pass it along…
