Spot the Risks!

Teens? Making mistakes? No! I don't believe it....

Not everything is as obvious a risk as you think? Sometimes you share a little bit on your Facebook and a little bit on your AIM profile and a little bit more on your myYearbook page. Each alone is fine, But when you combine them, they can be a real problem. And things that you thought were okay, may give away more than you thought; especially, when a college recruiter or your coach is looking.

This profile looks innocent enough, doesn't it? Check out Molly's profile below. Click the image below and roll your mouse around the screen. When an item is highlighted in yellow click on it. Think about what it says in terms of your own profile.

When Molly posts ... Her name
It's risky because... If you let other people know your name, it's easier for them to track you down.

When Molly posts... Her birthday
It's risky because... Your birthday can be used to steal your identity or guess your password

When Molly posts... Her friends
It's risky because... Listing friends makes it easier to find you in real life and to get more info on you

When Molly posts... Her pictures
It's risky because... Seriously. Would you be willing to have your principal, your parents, a predator, or the police see these pictures?

When Molly posts... Her bumper stickers
It's risky because... Bumper stickers make a statement about you and give strangers an "in" with you

When Molly posts... Her phone number
It's risky because... Well, we hope you can figure this one out yourself!

After reading this you might be thinking "How the heck am I supposed to have fun if it's dangerous to have this in my profile?" Well...how much fun would it be if a cyberbully went from harassing you to harassing your friends as well? Or if someone took your harmless pictures and changed them into something not so harmless? At first it might seem like it wouldn't be very fun if you kept all of that stuff private, but taking those extra steps to protect yourself could save you from a lot of heartache.
